Mean Little Town

A lot to say. First off, this is part 1 of a 5 part EP. It is based on a book by CS Lewis called The Great Divorce. In a very brief and entirely inadequate nutshell the book is about lost souls traveling from hell to heaven (in a bus) and being offered one last chance to enter heaven.

There’s a lot I can say about the book and my butchering of it for this EP. I’m hoping Lewis fans will forgive me and understand it’s more of a homage that an actual “treatment”. If you have never heard of the book I HIGHLY recommend that you read it, especially if you find interest in the themes of the EP.

In this first part, the narrator finds himself in a dimly lit run-down street waiting for a bus. (This dim street turns out to be the outskirts of Hell)

Lyrics:

Low down in an empty street
stretching endless to the gray
cold wet murmurs in the air
that thirst for the light of day

I Struggle to find my feet
gotta get myself away
Looking out for number one
There’ gonna be hell to pay
in this mean little town

Get back up and they’ll push you down
nobody’s gonna leave this mean little town

Keep trudging through a twilight hall
With the walls closing down
Despairing looks in little lines
All to get out, gotta get out
from this mean little town

back stabbing back biting
cold smile in fighting
scrabble for a penny on the ground
This mean little town

Dog eat dog
watch your back
or you’ll fall
Grab it fast
hold it tight
that is All
in this

Mean little town

(Abandon all hope
Ye who enter here)
